How to measure
- Measure the length and width of the lawn. For odd shapes, split it into rectangles.
- Choose seed (cheaper, slower) or turf / sod (instant lawn).
The formula
Seed: area ÷ 1,000 × 4 lb (or area × 35 g per m²) Turf: area × (1 + extra %) ÷ coverage per roll
Worked example
A 40 × 25 ft lawn is 1,000 sq ft. From seed you need about 4.2 lb (one 5 lb bag). As sod you need 105 pieces of 2 × 5 ft.
Tips before you buy
- Sow seed in early autumn or spring when the soil is warm and moist.
- Lay turf within 24 hours of delivery and water it well.
- Rake and level the soil first; bumps show through a new lawn.
Frequently asked questions
How much grass seed per square metre?
Around 35 g per m² for a new lawn, or half that for overseeding.
How much grass seed per 1,000 sq ft?
About 3–5 lb for a new lawn, depending on the grass type.
Seed or turf?
Seed costs much less but takes 6–8 weeks to establish. Turf is usable in 2–3 weeks.
