How to measure
- Measure the length and width of the patio or path.
- Measure one paver or slab.
- Choose the base depth: 4 in (10 cm) for patios and paths, 6–8 in (15–20 cm) for driveways.
The formula
Pavers = area × (1 + waste %) ÷ area of one paver Gravel base = area × base depth Bedding sand = area × 1 in (3 cm)
Worked example
A 12 × 10 ft patio with 8 × 4 in pavers needs 567 pavers with 5% waste, 1.48 cu yd of gravel base and 0.37 cu yd of sand.
Tips before you buy
- Slope the base slightly away from the house so water drains.
- Compact the gravel base in layers with a plate compactor.
- Herringbone patterns need about 10% waste instead of 5%.
Frequently asked questions
How deep should a paver base be?
4 in (10 cm) of compacted gravel for walkways and patios, 6–8 in (15–20 cm) for driveways.
Do I need sand under pavers?
Yes. A 1 in (2.5–3 cm) layer of bedding sand on the gravel lets you level each paver.
How much extra should I buy?
5% for straight layouts and 10% for herringbone or curved edges.
